THE EXTENT OF INFERENCE IN MĀTURĪDĪ (ASSOC. DR. NAIL KARAGOZ)

Inference (istidlāl) has a special place in the thought system of Māturīdī. Māturīdī sees it as one of the three sources of knowledge along with true narration (al-khabar al-sādiq) and sense perception. According to Māturīdī, it is not possible to reject the use of inference for obtaining knowledge. Inference is needed to test the information that comes from true narration and senses. Moreover, to reject the use of inference requires inference as well. According to Mādürîdî, it is possible to reach what is beyond the senses by inference. He has used several inferences to prove his views in matters such as the existence and unity of God, the existence of the afterlife, and temporality of the world. It is possible to reach the knowledge of these by the evidence from the observable universe.
