Archaeology and Social Anthropology Master’s Degree Programme

The purpose of the programme is to contribute to archaeological and social anthropological works and to knowledge accumulation mainly in Kyrgyzstan and broadly in Turkic speaking regions, ensuring scientific researches and training graduate specialists in these fields, thereby meeting the needs of staffing requirements in both Kyrgyzstan and Turkey as well as in other Turkic speaking countries.

Archaeology and Social Anthropology Major, while being an indigenous, it is also a wide broad spectrum programme, which covers the subjects of almost all branches of Social Sciences; It uses the data of such disciplines as History, Art History, Philology, Epigraphy, Religion, Mythology, Philosophy, Sociology, Ethnography, Folklore, and even Law and Economics; At the same time, it produces the data and information for this disciplines. That is why the programme not only will train specialists for archaeological and ethnographical museums and other institutions, but also will contribute to this disciplines.

The Department of History, which runs the programme, is provided with higher-education teaching personnel. The personel consists of 14 persons of who 5 professors, 4 associate professors, 3 assistant professors and 2 PhD.

There are a wide employment area and opportunities in Kyrgyzstan for the programmes graduates. They can be recruited by both major museums such as National Historical Museum, Sulaiman-Too Museum and provincial archaeological, ethnographical museums, as well as open-air museums such as Burana, other governmental and non-governmental cultural and touristic units and organizations.

In order to take Master’s degree on Archaeology and Social Anthropology a student must fulfil the minimum requirements of the “Regulations on Postgraduate Education and Examination of the Kyrgyz-Turkish Manas University” (Article 34-40) and the standards of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Kyrgyz Republic; succesfully complete the relevant courses and seminars; and succesfully defend a master’s thesis before a thesis committee.

The sdutents, who will succesfully complete the programme, will be granted a Master’s degree diploma on Archaeology and Social Anthropology by the Ministry of Education and Science of Kyrgyz Republic and a Master’s degree diploma on Archaeology and Social Anthropology Major by the Institute of Social Sciences of the Kyrgyz-Turkish Manas University.

The Programme Outcomes

By the end of the programme, students should be able to:

- Understand and be able to explain the role and significance of Archaeology and Social Anthropology in studying the history and culture of the human societies, their interactions, social and cultural states.

- Identify the research methods of Archaeology and Social Anthropology and use them in their investigations.

- Conduct the archaeological surveys and excavations and on the basis of these works write a report, expert evaluation and paper.

- Identify all main archaeological cultures in Central Asia and, at large, in Eurasia; their origins, characteristic features and their contributions to the world civilization.

- Identify professionally the ancient, medieval, modern age and current major ethno-cultural, confessional processes; analyze the processes.

- Identify the interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary methods in Archaeology and Social Anthropology; use the results of the laboratory analyses in the archaeological and anthropological researches.

- Identify the world and regional current issues and problems of Archaeology and Social Anthropology.

- Teach Archaeology and (or) Social Anthropology in schools, colleges and universities.

- Carry out the documentation, preservation, conservation of the museum objects; organize and improve the historical museum’s exhibtions.

- Protect, use and popularize the historical-cultural heritage.

- Engage in action on planning and implementing the state policy on historical-cultural heritage, culture, cultural tourism, interethnic and interreligious dialogue.

-  Identify the basic driving forces and patterns of the historical, cultural and social processes.

- Draw up the bibliography, annotation and abstract on certain issues of Archaeology and Social Anthropology, using the materials of archive, library, internet and other sources.

- Identify the basic sources and researches on certain issues of Archaeology and Social Anthropology in Kyrgyz, Turkic, Russian and English languages; use these sources in their research, educational and other activities.

- Identify the historical-cultural values of Kyrgyz, ethnic groups of Kyrgyzstan and people of neighbouring countries; treat them with respect and be tolerant to social, ethnic, religious and cultural differences.
