Effective Communication Seminar at Manas University: New Codes of the Digital Age Shared with Students

A seminar titled “Effective Communication in the Age of Visual Communication: Understanding, Being Understood, and Leaving a Mark” was held at Kyrgyz-Turkish Manas University (KTMU). The event featured Prof. Dr. Erkan Yuksel, a faculty member from Anadolu University’s Faculty of Communication Sciences, who discussed the evolving structure of communication in the digital age, effective message production, and personal communication skills.

Addressing an audience of academic and administrative staff as well as students, Prof. Yuksel emphasized that communication is a comprehensive process encompassing accurate understanding, building trust, and creating a lasting impact.

“The 5Ws and 1H of Effective Communication”

During the seminar, Prof. Dr. Erkan Yuksel pointed out that effective communication is a planned and conscious process, sharing the “5Ws and 1H of Communication” approach with participants. Yuksel stated that for a message to be successful, several questions must be answered in advance: “What will be said, why will it be said, how will it be conveyed, where will it be shared, when will it be delivered, and who is the target?”

He noted that alongside the content of the message, identifying the right target audience, choosing the appropriate channel, and careful timing are decisive factors in the final outcome. Using various examples, Yuksel illustrated how the same message can create entirely different effects when presented through different methods.

“Digitalization is Reshaping Communication Processes”

Highlighting the impact of digital transformation on communication practices, Yuksel noted that being visible on digital platforms has become a fundamental necessity for both individuals and organizations. He stressed that reaching the right audience with the right tools and effective messaging is crucial. Furthermore, he argued that the rapid spread of a message in digital environments is not enough on its own; being understood correctly is just as important as visibility.

“Effective Communication is Not Just Speaking, But Understanding”

Asserting that success in communication is not limited to merely transmitting a message, Prof. Dr.  Erkan Yuksel remarked that accurately analyzing the other party, establishing empathy, and developing mutual understanding are integral parts of the process.

“True success in communication is possible only through correctly understanding the other side. A healthy dialogue cannot be established without listening, grasping the context, and considering different perspectives,” he said. Yuksel also pointed out that the habit of reacting quickly has increased in the digital age, emphasizing that an approach focused first on understanding will reduce misunderstandings and contribute to stronger relationships.

“Non-Verbal Communication Determines the Impact of the Message”

Explaining the role of body language, physical appearance, and tone of voice with examples, Prof. Dr. Yuksel stated that the same expression can take on vastly different meanings through varying inflections and visual cues. He reminded the audience that non-verbal elements are powerful determinants in communication, often carrying as much weight as the words themselves.

“Perceptual Differences Can Lead to Misunderstandings”

Yuksel noted that differences in perception can cause "communication accidents" and that context and individual experiences play a major role in the process. He emphasized that for effective communication, skills such as flexibility, awareness, and the ability to consider diverse viewpoints must be developed.

Drawing attention to the importance of sustainable communication models that build trust, Prof. Dr. Erkan Yuksel concluded by stating that transparency, consistency, and accurate message management directly affect success at both the individual and institutional levels.
