Seminar on “The Self in the Digital Age” Held

A seminar titled “The Self in the Digital Age” was conducted by the Head of the Department of Educational Sciences, Prof. Dr. Yücel Öksüz.

During the seminar, the effects of digitalization on individuals’ self-perception and identity presentation were discussed. Prof. Dr. Yücel Öksüz stated that social media has transformed the way individuals present themselves, and that people can develop different levels of self in digital environments, including the real self, ideal self, and performance self.

Öksüz emphasized that identity presentation in digital environments has become more selective and constructed, noting that social media algorithms play a role in reinforcing individuals’ identities. He also highlighted that, despite offering opportunities for free self-expression, digital self-presentation may lead to negative psychological outcomes such as social comparison, decreased self-esteem, and loneliness.

The seminar also անդրlined the impact of social media use—especially among young people—on self-perception and body satisfaction, emphasizing that the digital world has become a dynamic space that continuously reshapes individual identity.

The program concluded with a Q&A session.
