Young Sociologists Participate in a Panel on “Ziya Gökalp and His Sociology on the 100th Anniversary of His Death”

Kyrgyz-Turkish Manas University’s Faculty of Humanities Department of Sociology organized a student panel titled “Ziya Gökalp and His Sociology on the 100th Anniversary of His Death” as part of World Sociologists Day on November 19, 2024.

The event was attended by the Dean of the Faculty of Humanities, Prof. Dr. Alpaslan Aşık; the Head of the Department of Sociology, Prof. Dr. Ertan Özensel; faculty members, and students. The panel focused on Ziya Gökalp, a founding figure in Turkish sociology, known for his personality and influential ideas.

Delivering the opening speech, the Dean of the Faculty of Humanities, Prof. Dr. Alpaslan Aşık emphasized Gökalp's significant contributions not only to sociology but also to other disciplines, including history and literature. Prof. Dr. Aşık stated: “Ziya Gökalp was both a scholar who laid the foundations of Turkish sociology and a versatile intellectual who made important contributions to literature, history, and other disciplines. Understanding his legacy is invaluable to us. I extend my gratitude to everyone involved in organizing this meaningful event, especially the Head of the Department of Sociology, and wish the participating students great success.”

In his remarks, the Head of the Department of Sociology, Prof. Dr. Ertan Özensel highlighted Gökalp's immense contributions to sociology. He also expressed hope that the panel would provide students with a valuable academic foundation and a broadened perspective.

The panel, moderated by Kanimet Begimbek uulu, featured Sociology students exploring various dimensions of Ziya Gökalp’s sociological approaches. Topics discussed included Gökalp’s influence on national values, his interpretation of the concepts of hars (culture) and civilization, his educational philosophy and its impact, as well as his sociological perspective on religion as a component of identity.

The event concluded with a question-and-answer session, followed by a group photo of the participants.
