The first of the 2022-2023 Academic Year Friday Conversations at the Open Tribune has been held on 21.10.2022 by KTMU Islamic Sciences Department Head Prof. Dr. Bekir TATLI. Bekir TATLI  made a speech on the subject of "The Prophet Muhammad (s.a.s.) and the Issue of Polygamy." The lecturer shared extensive information on the subject of polygamy in religions and societies throughout history.

Tatlı said that polygamy existed in many societies such as Lydians, Iranians, Greeks, Egyptians, Babylonians, Assyrians, Chinese, Indians, Slavs, Germans, Turks, as well as in religions such as Judaism and Christianity. He emphasized that polygamy was encountered in 80 % of all societies, however, the most common practice in these societies where polygamy was encountered was not polygamy, but monogamy. He stated, that polygamy, which was practiced unlimitedly in the society of "Jahiliyya", was limited to four together with Islam-to be applied in case of necessity. Tatli said, that the Qur'an also recommends monogamy, and that monogamy was common among the Companions at a rate of 80%. The lecturer said, that The Prophet (s.a.s.) was married to Hatice for a long time and that although he had the means, he did not marry again until the age of 50. Tatli emphasized, that The Prophet's marriages after the death of Hz. Hatice and after the age of 50, had political or social purposes. Thus, some marriages improved relations between tribes and thus accelerated the spread of Islam.

In conclusion if his speech, Tatlı stated  that the issue of polygamy is not a religious issue, and that the terms of its implementation differ from society to society. The conversation, which was held with the intense participation of faculty members from inside and outside the faculty, many undergraduate and graduate students and the public, ended with a question-answer session and presentation of certificate of appreciation.
