“Prevalence, damage and control of bacterial blight disease in the natural forests and orchards of Kyrgyzstan”


On October 21, 2021, at the Plant Protection Department of the Agricultural Faculty, together with the Fauna and Flora organization, a seminar was held on the topic: “Prevalence, damage and control of bacterial blight disease in the natural forests and orchards of Kyrgyzstan”, within the framework of an international project funded by the Swiss Science Foundation (project coordinator in Kyrgyzstan, prof. Tinatin Doolotkeldieva).

The main purpose of the seminar was  to disseminate the results of the project on the identification of bacterial  fire blight as a dangerous and quarantine disease of fruit trees in forestry, orchards in all regions of Kyrgyzstan.

Heads of quarantine, phytopathological, and toxicological laboratories and specialists from Celal-Abad, Osh, Talas, Issyk-Kul, Chui regions attended the seminar. Also the specialists of the biofactories and biolaboratories, plant protection consulting services, farmers, foresters and other interested persons had participated in seminar.

The seminar was opened by the dean of the Agriculture faculty, Professor Atilla Dursun.In his speech he focused on the role of timely monitoring and quarantine measures in the spread of a dangerous disease - bacterial fire blight.  He thanked the scientific foundation for the support of this project carried out at the faculty and the project implementers.

Prof. Tinatin Doolotkeldieva, in her presentation, presented in detail the important results of the project to identify foci of stone fruit tree disease in the regions of the country and the danger caused by the prevalence of this disease. The representative of Flora and Fauna Ormon  Sultangaziev  in his presentation spoke about how this organization helps local residents forestry on the preservation of the unique biodiversity of forest ecosystems.

Dr. Makhabat Konurbaeva in her  presentation informed about the measures to combat this dangerous disease.

The participants of the seminar actively participated in the discussion of the presented presentations and the information received. Many heads of regional laboratories told about the difficulties experienced by local regional laboratories due to the lack of phytopathologists, entomologists and other specialties in plant protection. And they also asked the Plant Protection Department KTMU to help in the correct identification of plant diseases that they desperately need.

An important part of the seminar was the presentation of the book-brochure: Bacterial fire blight Erwinia  amylovora (methodological guide on the definition and control of the disease), which was published with the support of Fauna and Flora and the Swiss Science Foundation. The books were distributed to all participants. At the end, all participants were invited to a coffee break and to continue the discussion with a visit to the laboratories of the Plant Protection Department.

Thus, the seminar successfully completed its work, reaching its goal - direct communication with farmers, local experts and feedback in the provision of scientific and practical advice.
