Prof. Dr. Nurzat Totubayeva, who made the opening speech of the program, emphasised that they are not only discussing the issues of climate change but also aiming to take solution oriented steps. “We are not only going to highlight the problem here, but also we are going to discuss concrete actions that could help slow it down or maybe even stop it. Our efforts towards sustainable development represent an opportunity to leave a healthier and more prosperous world for future generations,” he stated.

Azerbaijan Bishkek Embassy Adviser Zulfikar Tanileyev, in his opening speech, emphasised that he believes that at the and of the panel there will be significant results and suggestions. He also thanked those who contributed to the panel, starting with our Rector Prof. Dr. Alpaslan Ceylan, then everyone who contributed to organizing this panel.

“Nature Won’t Stay Silent, We Need to Hear It”

Deputy Rector Prof. Dr. Almaz Ibrayev, pointed out the significance of protecting nature, underlined that humankind must live in harmony with nature in his speech. “One of our urgent topics on our agenda is harmonizing with nature. Nature is telling us to be careful, we can’t ignore the warning signs. We have lived nomadic life in close contact with nature throughout history as Turkic people. Thanks to the bond we built with nature, we survived. Nature will not remain silent and will demand care, despite the development change of technologies,” he stated.

Prof. Dr. Ibrayev emphasised that every detail of nature presents a message to humankind. In this sense, using the example of tree rings, he said, “When we cut a tree, we see it’s annual rings which show it’s age and tough years it has lived through. If the rings are thin, it means there was a drought that year. If there are horizontal rings, we can understand that that tree was damaged. Nature is speaking, we need to be able to read this language.”

Prof. Dr. Ibrayev emphasised that if nature is not taken care of, even people’s inner world and actions will change. “If we don’t take care of nature, this indifference will not only affect our environment but it will also affect us. Humankind’s care for nature is also care of themselves.”

“Turkish Nation has a Philosophy of Living in Jarmony with Nature”

Rector of Kyrgyz-Turkish Manas University Prof. Dr. Alpaslan Ceylan, emphasised the university centered understanding of development and stated that they determinedly continuing their efforts to ensure that students receive quality education. He also mentioned that climate change, which started with the industrial revolution, has been accelerating and that the countries most affected by this change are the underdeveloped ones.

In his speech, Rector Prof. Dr. Alpaslan Ceylan pointed out that approximately four billion people around the world are exposed to the negative effects of climate change. He stated, “The world has a divine balance. When this balance is disrupted, nature will eventually take its revenge. In protecting the environment, responsibilities fall on all segments of society, from individuals to states. On an individual level, everyone should, of course, do their part in protecting the environment they live in. However, alongside individual efforts, what is most important is the adoption of institutional and political measures. In terms of protecting seas, oceans, and forested areas, governments, international actors, and organizations must prioritize preserving the natural cycle over protecting the interests of capital owners or consumer demands, and take effective steps in this direction.” He emphasized the importance of global cooperation and noted that the Turkish nation, with its philosophy of living in harmony with nature, has always protected the environment throughout its history.

Rector Prof. Dr. Alpaslan Ceylan, emphasizing the important responsibilities that universities have in both conducting scientific research on the role of the environmental crisis in climate change and raising public awareness on this issue, stated, “At Manas University, we prioritize the protection of the environment and strive to fulfill our responsibilities within the scope of our university’s duty. By hosting this panel, we aim to contribute to raising awareness about the role of the environmental crisis in climate change, both within our university and in society. I would like to thank the participants of the panel for their contributions. I hope that the panel will lead to beneficial outcomes for our Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, and the world.” He concluded his speech with these remarks.
