A roundtable titled “Strengthening Regional Unity: The Role of the Organization of Turkic States in Central Asia and Beyond” was held at Kyrgyz-Turkish Manas University on November 4, 2024. The event took place in the Rectorate Conference Hall and was organized by the Turkic World Strategic Research Center in anticipation of the upcoming 11th Summit of the Council of Heads of State of the Organization of Turkic States, scheduled for November 6 in Bishkek.

Participants included Manas University’s Rector, Prof. Dr. Alpaslan Ceylan; Deputy Rector, Prof. Dr. Almaz Ibraev; Vice Rector, Prof. Dr. Kamalbek Karymshakov; Faculty Member Prof. Dr. Aynur Corobekova from the Diplomatic Academy of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Kyrgyz Republic; Director of the Haydar Aliyev Center for Eurasian Studies at Ibn Khaldun University, Prof. Dr. Yaşar Sarı; and Dr. Najiba Mustafayeva, also from Ibn Khaldun University.

In his opening remarks, Manas University’s Rector, Prof. Dr. Alpaslan Ceylan highlighted the profound and enduring heritage of Turkish culture. He emphasized, “Some scientists and bureaucrats refer to a 1000-year history for Turkish culture, but in reality, Turkish culture has a rich history that spans over 5000 years. Our legacy began in the Altai region and evolved in Mongolia, where organized states and civilizations were established. Therefore, 1000 years represents only a fraction of our cultural wealth.”

Prof. Dr. Ceylan described the Turkish nation as one of the most historically rooted in the world, underscoring, “This is a source of pride for us, but culture only survives when it is actively lived. The further we drift from our roots, the less likely our culture is to endure.” He expressed concern over the growing influence of cultural imperialism, which he noted “has infiltrated our homes first through television, and now through mobile devices. We must actively protect and live our culture. Those disconnected from their past have no future, like a leaf detached from its branch, driven aimlessly by the wind. Without strong roots, we risk losing our unique identity.” He stressed the importance of safeguarding the cultural values inherited from ancestors and the need to develop cultural awareness in the younger generation. Highlighting the activities of the Organization of Turkic States, Rector Ceylan underscored how such meetings foster a spirit of unity and cooperation.

Deputy Rector Prof. Dr. Almaz Ibraev outlined the mission and strategic importance of the Organization of Turkic States. He noted that the organization strengthens historical and cultural bonds among its member states while playing a pivotal role in economic cooperation and security. Prof. Dr. Ibraev also described its work in education and culture, emphasizing its contributions to the sustainable development of Central Asia. “Today, the Organization of Turkic States is recognized globally, contributing to regional projects and supporting cultural, social, and economic growth.” Prof. Dr. Ibraev emphasized the importance of regional cooperation in Central Asia, adding, “As people of this region and members of the Organization of Turkic States, we must actively participate in efforts to enhance cooperation across various fields.” He highlighted the value of this cooperation for universities and educational institutions, expressing his belief in the organization’s potential to make significant contributions to Kyrgyz-Turkish Manas University.

Following the opening speeches, the event continued with a panel discussion titled “Strengthening Regional Unity: The Role of the Organization of Turkic States in Central Asia and Beyond,” moderated by Vice Rector Prof. Dr. Kamalbek Karymshakov.

Presenters included Deputy Rector Prof. Dr. Almaz Ibraev, Prof. Dr. Aynur Corobekova from the Diplomatic Academy of the Kyrgyz Republic, Prof. Dr. Yaşar Sarı from Ibn Khaldun University, and Dr. Najiba Mustafayeva, also from Ibn Khaldun University. Discussions centered around the Organization of Turkic States’ growing influence in Central Asia and beyond, along with strategies to strengthen cooperation across the Turkic world.

The event concluded with an engaging question-and-answer session, marked by productive and insightful scientific discussions among the participants. To express gratitude, Certificates of Appreciation were awarded to the speakers, and the meeting ended with a group photo.
