Kyrgyz-Turkish Manas University recently hosted a remarkable exhibition celebrating Kyrgyz and Turkish cultural heritage. The “Carrying the Magnificence of the Past into the Future” exhibition, organized in collaboration with Manas University, Ankara Maturation Institute, and Ancestors Traces Public Fund, took place from November 4 to 6, 2024, in the Rectorate foyer of Manas University, attracting numerous art lovers.
This unique event captivated attendees by presenting the rich handicrafts and cultural heritage of both countries, ensuring these traditions are passed on to future generations. The exhibition, coordinated by Prof. Dr. Nezahat Ceylan from the Department of History, was inaugurated by the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Manas University, Prof. Dr. İbrahim Çapak, and Rector, Prof. Dr. Alpaslan Ceylan. The event was attended by Vice Rector, Prof. Dr. Recai Doğan; Advisor to the Rector, Prof. Dr. Kemal Polat; Director of the Ankara Maturation Institute Ahsen Hıdıroğlu, Ancestors Traces Public Fund founder Asel Kalkanova, Lecturer Burul Mambetova from the Faculty of Fine Arts, and many visitors.
During the opening, Prof. Dr. Nezahat Ceylan expressed her pride in hosting the exhibition in Bishkek at a time when President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and Emine Erdoğan were also visiting. She emphasized the importance of cultural preservation, stating, “Our aim in organizing this exhibition is to highlight the cultural unity of our university, which has fostered Kyrgyz-Turkish cooperation since its founding in 1995. The exhibition features handicrafts from the Ankara Maturation Institute alongside local crafts by Kyrgyz women.”
Prof. Dr. Ceylan added that the exhibition sought to reflect Kyrgyz-Turkish cultural richness at Manas University, sharing a message of unity and expressing gratitude to all contributors.
Director of the Ankara Maturation Institute Ahsen Hıdıroğlu expressed his pleasure in visiting Kyrgyzstan and Manas University. He explained that the embroidery pieces, featuring 18th- and 19th-century designs transferred from abroad, showcase traditional crafts produced with intricate designs and fine craftsmanship. “Our traditional handicrafts, created with original designs in the Ankara Maturation Institute workshops, are proudly displayed at this exhibition,” said Hıdıroğlu.
Among the exhibits, intricate needlework on French linen fabrics and silk-thread embroidery on silk weaving drew considerable attention. A 17th-century tapestry featuring hand-painted and hand-embroidered tile patterns stood out as a highlight of the exhibition. All the works in the exhibition blended traditional Turkish craftsmanship with a modern sensibility.
The exhibition underscored the importance of preserving Kyrgyz and Turkish cultural values, going beyond merely showcasing handicrafts. Serving as a cultural bridge, the event aimed to keep these traditions alive for future generations. It displayed the skills of Kyrgyz and Turkish artisans, establishing a deep connection to the shared heritage of both countries, and provided participants with an enriching cultural experience.
