Student Festival Dedicated to the 95th Anniversary of Chyngyz Aitmatov

Kyrgyz-Turkish Manas University hosted the student festival titled “Aitmatov-Fiesta” on December 12, 2023, on the occasion of the 95th anniversary of the birth of the famous Kyrgyz writer Chyngyz Aitmatov. The event organized in cooperation with the Russian Language and Literature, English Language and Literature, Chinese Language and Literature programs of the Department of Philology of the Faculty of Humanities and the Confucius Institute, aimed to familiarize young people with the unique works of Chyngyz Aitmatov.

Rector of Manas University, Prof. Dr. Alpaslan Ceylan; Deputy Rector, Dr. Baktygul Kalambekova; Dean of the Faculty of Humanities, Prof. Dr. Alpaslan Aşık; Head of the Department of Philology, Prof. Dr. Burul Sagynbaeva, and Director of the Confucius Institute of Bishkek State University named after K. Karasaev Gulzat Isamatova, along with jury members, academic staff, students, and members of the press attended the opening ceremony of the festival.

The event commenced with the singing of the national anthems of the two countries, the screening of the introductory film of the university and a documentary film about Chyngyz Aitmatov.

Head of the Department of Philology, Prof. Dr. Burul Sagynbaeva stated that the festival was organized for the third time with student participation increasing every year. This year, 93 students participated in the festival. Prof. Dr. Burul Sagynbaeva thanked the organizers and participants and wished the festival to be successful.

Director of the Confucius Institute of the Bishkek State University named after K. Karasaev Gulzat Isamatova highlighted that Chyngyz Aitmatov is recognized not only as a writer but also as a source of pride for the Kyrgyz people, with the expressions “Kyrgyz says Chyngyz, Chyngyz says Kyrgyz.” She emphasized that Aitmatov's life sets an inspiring example for the Kyrgyz people and his unique works are passed on to future generations as an unforgettable heritage.

Dean of the Faculty of Humanities, Prof. Dr. Alpaslan Aşık thanked everyone who participated in the event and said, “The whole Turkic world is proud of Chyngyz Aitmatov. His works will remain as an unforgettable legacy for future generations.”

Deputy Rector, Dr. Baktygul Kalambekova, emphasized, “Today the world celebrates the 95th anniversary of the great writer Chyngyz Aitmatov. The works of the writer are of great interest around the world, and new aspects of the writer are discovered with the events organized every year.”

Rector of Manas University, Prof. Dr. Alpaslan Ceylan, said, “The youth of the entire Turkic world should know Chyngyz Aitmatov and his works. Aitmatov's works not only contain deep meanings but also bear the traces of the totalitarian period. Understanding the period in which these works were written will help us better grasp Aitmatov's messages.”

The festival consisted of three main parts: “Staging and Artistic Reading of Aitmatov's Works,” “My Aitmatov” essay contest, and “Do you know Aitmatov's Works?” quiz contest, providing participants with the chance to test their knowledge of Aitmatov's works.

At the end of the festival, prizes were awarded to the winners in each section, creating an atmosphere that highlighted the artistic and literary talents of young people. This special event was an important step towards strengthening cultural ties and raising literary awareness, offering young generations a closer acquaintance with the valuable legacy of Chyngyz Aitmatov.
