Panel on “Development of Writing in Turkic Civilization”

The panel and exhibition on the “Development of Writing in Turkic Civilization" were organized by Kyrgyz-Turkish Manas University`s Turkic Civilization Research and Application Center. The event took place on December 19, 2023 at Kasym Tynystanov Conference Hall.

The panel commenced with the national anthems of both countries. Head of KTMU Turkic Civilization Research and Application Center,  Prof. Dr. Mehmet Arif Ozerbash expressed gratitude to those who contributed to the event`s organization. He emphasized the cultural richness of Turkic civilization through language and writing.

Prof. Dr. Mehmet Arif Ozerbash highlighted the panel as an example of intercultural interaction and learning. He stated, “This panel represents a crucial step in the in-depth examination of Turkic civilization, ensuring the transfer of cultural heritage to future generations.”

Deputy Rector of KTMU, Dr. Baktygul Kalambekova pointed out that ancient Turks, adept in using various writing systems from ancient Uighur scripts to runic scripts, created a sacred heritage by inscribing their wishes, aspirations, dreams, and signs on rocks, caves, bowls, and plates. Dr. Baktygul Kalambekova emphasized that writings are not merely signatures, pictures, or clues; they also convey messages from the past.

Manas University's Rector, Prof. Dr. Alpaslan Ceylan discussed the fundamental elements constituting the Turkish nation stating, “The three basic features that define the nation are the flag, homeland, and language.” Prof. Dr. Alpaslan Ceylan underscored the importance of reading Gokturk letters to understand the Turkish nation's past, referencing Bilge Kagan's advice: “As long as the sky above does not collapse and the earth below does not split, no one can destroy our traditions!” Finally, he highlighted that unification through a common alphabet is a milestone as crucial as the independence struggles of countries. Prof. Dr. Alpaslan Ceylan expressed his belief that the unity of the Turkish nation will be further strengthened by language unity, concluding his speech by thanking Prof. Dr. Mehmet Arif Özerbash and all the organizers of the panel.

Prof. Ozan Yılmaz, Head of the Department of Turkology, chaired the panel and provided important information to participants about the evolution of writing in Turkic civilization.

Prof. Burul Sagynbaeva, Head of the Department of Philology, presented significant information under the title “The Issue of the Latin Alphabet in the Kyrgyz Language.” Her in-depth analysis of the evolution of language and the role of the alphabet delved into the written history of the Kyrgyz language.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Taalai Abdiev delivered an interesting presentation on “The Word Bitik in Contemporary Kyrgyz Language.” His detailed examination of the word's origin, usage, and cultural context provided linguistics with important perspectives.

Asst. Prof. Dr. Mirzat Rakymbek uulu presented valuable information to participants under the title “On Arabic Script in Turks.” He brought a comprehensive perspective to the panel, discussing the interaction of Turkic civilization with the Arabic script and the traces of this interaction on language, culture, and history.

At the end of the panel, “Certificates of Appreciation” were presented to the participants.
