Panel on the Nowruz Tradition in the Turkic World

On March 20, 2024, the Turkic Civilization Research and Application Center of Kyrgyz-Turkish Manas University organized the panel titled “Nowruz Tradition in the Turkic World”. The event was attended by the Rector of Manas University, Prof. Dr. Alpaslan Ceylan; Deputy Rector, Dr. Baktygul Kalambekova; Vice Rectors Prof. Dr. Mehmet Sezai Turk and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Kamalbek Karymshakov; General Secretary, Prof. Dr. Oktay Ozgul; Advisors to the Rector Prof. Dr. Recai Dogan and Prof. Dr. Serhat Burmaoglu, as well as many academicians and students. The program took place at the Kasym Tynystanov Conference Hall.

During the opening speech, Prof. Dr. Mehmet Arif Ozerbash, Head of the Turkic Civilization Research and Application Center, defined Nowruz as a new day and the beginning of a new year, emphasizing its significant place in Turkish culture. Prof. Dr. Mehmet Arif Ozerbash stated, “I congratulate you on Nowruz with the desire to preserve this beautiful tradition from our ancestors and maintain this common cultural value forever.”

Deputy Rector, Dr. Baktygul Kalambekova extended congratulations to the panel participants on the occasion of Nowruz, highlighting its significance as a shared holiday across the entire Turkic world. She expressed, “Nowruz is a common holiday of the entire Turkic world. As we identify similarities in our holidays and traditions, we will celebrate many more holidays that contribute to the unity of the Turkish nation. Happy Nowruz Holiday.”

In his opening speech, Rector Prof. Dr. Alpaslan Ceylan emphasized the necessity of preserving national values, stating that culture carries the values of a nation into the future.

Stating that Nowruz is a festival of friendship, brotherhood, goodness, and happiness, Rector Prof. Dr. Alpaslan Ceylan emphasized that it is a collection of national customs and traditions that unite the Turkish nation. He expressed that this meaningful day not only transcends geographical borders but also embodies the cultural diversity that has been kept alive for centuries in Turkish homelands.

Calling for the preservation of Turkish cultural values, Prof. Dr. Alpaslan Ceylan emphasized that being insensitive to cultural values has a destabilizing effect on unity and integrity. For this reason, he underscored that important figures in Turkish culture such as Dede Korkut, Oguz, Manas, Ahmet Yesevi, Yunus Emre, Mamtumkulu Firaki, Nizami Gencevi, Yusuf Has Hajib, and deep-rooted customs and traditions like Nowruz should not be forgotten but rather remembered and celebrated.

The program continued with the panel titled “Nowruz Tradition in the Turkic World”. Chaired by Prof. Dr. Alpaslan Aşık, Dean of the Faculty of Humanities, various aspects and the importance of Nowruz were discussed. Prof. Dr. Nazgul Turdubaeva presented “Nowruz as the Harbinger of Renewal,” Prof. Dr. Chagatai Akengin presented "Nowruz and Art," Prof. Dr. Ozan Yılmaz presented “Nowruz in Poems,” and Assist. Prof. Dr. Aiitmamat Kariev presented “Nowruz in Religion and Kyrgyz Tradition.”

The program concluded with the presentation of participation certificates to the panelists followed by a group photograph to commemorate the event.
